Earlier known as Pazhanellipurath Thaikatu Mooss , one of the well known Ashtavaidya Families, based at Pallippuram in the erstwhile Malabar who were the Royal Vaidyas of Kozhikkode Samoothiris ,rulers of Malabar. Once the Mooss was invited to treat Sakthan Thampuran,the then powerful ruler of Kochi state. The Samoothiri who was not in good terms with sakthan Thampuran, got angry with the mooss and exiled him. His dejected wife and daughter left keeping only the deity of Vettakkoru makan (Lord Siva) with them and travelled towards south with out any specific goal in the night. As they crossed the “Bharatha puzha “ the river that divided Malabar and Kochi not knowing where to go and where to spend the night, a man with a lamp appeared from dark . Hearing the pitiful story of the helpless ladies , he fed them and guided them to a deserted Namboothiri house at Kizhakkumpattukara ,Thrissur .He asked them to take rest and disappeared suddenly .They found that the Lamp he was carrying was solidified firmly to the ground .Then they understood that the guide was none other than their presiding deity Lord Vettakkorumankan .Since then the family became ardent disciples of Lord Vettakkorumakan .The successors of this family is known as Thrissur Thaikatmooss.
The ‘Aapaddeepam’ is a work in Sanskrit by Subbarama Bhattar based on the above story and ‘Maargadeepam’ is the Malayalam version of ‘Aapaddeepam’ by his disciple sri Vaidyabhooshanam Raghavan Thirumulppaad.
